Showcase Properties Presents: Ask the Agent
A tree growing in dried up pool.
This series highlights each team member’s unique experiences, recommendations, perspectives, and advice. We hope it will help you get to know your REALTOR® and our support staff with a little more familiarity, and maybe you’ll find you have something in common to talk with us about when you meet us in person!

There isn’t a job or profession in the world without its own war stories, and Real Estate is no exception. Consider: Agents are always walking into other people’s homes for showings, inspections, and appraisals – and with everyone being human, mishaps occur. Some are mildly disconcerting, like maybe the current owner is singing in the shower when you visit. Others can be pure, unadulterated chaos, such as a house that looks like it could be featured on an episode of “Hoarders”, or perhaps residents who forgot you were showing up and get unexpectedly caught in compromising situations.

This is where the agent is really tested and when skills of diplomacy must rival that of the UN. They must be unflappable in the face of the unexpected, undaunted when confronting mayhem, and utterly unbothered at a sudden change in plans. This is the intrepid workforce that laughs in the face of blunder and relishes the challenge of adapting quickly in new circumstances. You will never find a more stalwart companion or loyal partner than your REALTOR®, whose sole mission is to find you that ideal property – even if it means herding the current owner’s livestock at lunchtime (yeah, that really happened) or holding your hand as you tour a spooky and (alleged) haunted house.

From the funny to the fantastic to the maniacally heart-stopping, we share some of ours with you:

What’s the funniest, weirdest, or most unusual thing you’ve encountered as a Real Estate professional?

Crime scene tape
“Showing a beautiful property only to have a neighbor come up and ask me if I knew what had happened on the property, only to have him proceed to the story about the suicide and murder.”

– Roxanne Free, REALTOR®

“Welcome to Dawn the Realtor® Twilight Zone. Where would you like me to start? From finding a dead person to finding a naked person, and all kinds of stuff in between, I’ve got exciting stories to tell. They’ll go in my eventual memoir – with names redacted.”

– Dawn Mahler, REALTOR®

Angela Durrell
“I’ve walked in on someone asleep in bed. I’ve also ended up wrangling loose livestock. ”

–Chris Workman, REALTOR®

“OMG, I once walked in with clients while a lady was in the shower!!!!”

– Mary O’Neal, Broker Associate

Angela's Peaceful Patio
Kathy Prater
“A sleeping seller on the couch that I had to put a sheet over to hide her.”

– Kathy Prater, REALTOR®

“A home advertised with a pool that turned out to be utterly bone-dry and empty. And it had a tree growing in the middle of it.”

– Patty Canatsey Davis, REALTOR®

Lacey's plant paradise.
“Showing a vacant house and being surprised by the naked man sleeping there.”

– Linda Adamson, REALTOR®

“I’m not a realtor, but in working with them, I did have an unusual and memorable experience – this really cool house in Mount Dora that came up for sale. The previous owner was a famous artist and had lived there for many many years even after her husband died. The house had so many levels and secret rooms and a unique interior architecture like stuff you see on the tv shows. And the view! Absolutely breathtaking as you looked out over lake Dora. Cool outside features, little hidden gems and surprises everywhere! I will never forget that house!”
